드로잉웍스는 밀집된 도시-건축과 자연 환경의 인상으로부터 잠재된 희미해진 흔적을 재해석하고, 궁극적으로는 자연을 환기시키는데 목적을 두고 실현하는 건축사무소이다. 건축을 더불어 설치 미술, 전시, 공공 디자인 등 다양한 분야에 관심을 가져 경우에 따라서 여러 분야 전문가와 협업 디자이너들을 통한 탄력적인 운영으로 프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 설계와 제작의 긴밀한 협업 체계를 위해 2021년 시공관리 전문회사(PM)인 공정도가를 공동 설립해서 디자인-빌드 오피스로 프로젝트를 완성하고 있다. 갑자기 떠오르는 건축적 발상에 기대어 작업하기보다는 대지에 내재되어 있는 잠재력을 발굴하고 지역성을 토대로 극대화하는 작업을 하고 있다.
드로잉웍스의 지론은 건축은 예술과 마찬가지로 창의적이며 또한 추상적인 것을 풀어내는 작업이다. 다소 모호할 수도 있는 예술에 비해 현실적인 건축에서 초기 컨셉과 실제 실무 간의 간극은 커지기 마련이다. 그래서 대부분의 건축 실무에서 ‘컨셉’의 단계는 소모되고, 심지어 사장되는 경우가 많다. 이러한 현실에 안타까움을 느껴, 건축 작업도 그 아이디어의 출발이 다른 예술과 다르지 않다는 것에 집중하기 시작했다. 즉 예술이지만 그것을 건축물로 드러내는 것, 컨셉에 집중하며 다양한 방식으로 그것을 풀어나가는 것에 주목한다. 이것은 드로잉웍스가 건축과 인테리어의 구분 없이 초기에 설정했던 컨셉을 실내의 분위기까지 이끌어가려고 노력하는 이유이기도 하다. 또한 우리는 지속가능한 건축을 위해 노력하는 것은 모든 건축가의 역할이라고 말한다. 그렇기에 우리가 제시하는 지속가능한 건축은 책임감이 반드시 필요하다. 마을에 집 한 채를 짓더라도 단순히 그 건물만을 생각하는 것이 아니라 그 마을의 역사와 지속적 분위기를 건축가가 만든다는 책임감을 가져야 한다는 것이다. 지역성을 기반으로 사고하고 새로운 것들이 추가되었을 때 벌어질 먼 미래를 바라보는 예측을 하며 주변과 같이 상생하고 공유하는 건축, 그것이 바로 드로잉웍스가 제시하는 지속가능한 건축이다. 프로젝트를 진행함에 있어서 최대의 고민은 드로잉웍스만의 일관적 색깔을 어떻게 매 작업물에 녹여낼지가 고민이다. 이것이 매번 다른 건축주와 대지 그리고 닥쳐올 많은 도전에도 방향성을 가지고 모험을 멈추지 않을 것을 의미하기 때문이다. 과거와 미래 모두를 고려한 책임감을 가지고 자연과 소통하고 공공에 기여하는 예술 스튜디오 드로잉웍스는 앞으로도 “지속가능한 건축”을 향한 여정을 계속해 나갈 것이다.
DRAWING WORKS is a architectural office to reinterpret faint traces, which are latent from the impressions of dense urban-architecture and natural environments and ultimately ventilating nature. This office is mostly focused on public designs and gives careful consideration to architectural contents and places, where buildings would be constructed, regardless of housing, commercial and business facilities. They are interested in diverse fields, including installation art, exhibition and public design, in addition to architecture and according to circumstances, they have a flexible management system to work on projects with specialists from different fields and collaborative designers.
Instead of counting on spontaneous architectural ideas, the intrinsic potential of the site is excavated and the locality are optimized for the work process. DRAWING WORKS believes that architecture is creative just like art and a process of unraveling the abstract concept. In contrast to the nature of art which is rather ambiguous, architecture is realistic, so the gap between the initial concept and the actual process grows larger. Accordingly, in most architectural procedures, there are many cases where the phase of the ‘concept’ becomes consumed and gets put out. This stimulated regrets about reality so the focus started to be emphasized on the point that the initial point of ideas in construction operations is exactly alike other art. In other words, the focus was on the concept of revealing art as a building and unraveling it in various ways. This is also the reason why DRAWING WORKS attempts to express the primary concept, set up for both architecture and interior design without division, to the interior ambiance. Additionally, we stated that all architects should play a part to aim for sustainable architecture. To this end, responsibility is a must to realize the sustainable architecture that we suggest. If we build a house in a village, we should not only think about the building. Instead, the architects must take responsibility and consider the history of the village to form a sustained mood. Sustainable architecture directed by DRAWING WORKS is architecture that reasons based on locality and forecasts in the far future with novelty added, and finally, architecture that coexists and shares with the community. The biggest concern about making progress on projects is related to how to apply the consistent colors of DRAWING WORKS on each workpiece. It is because this signifies the directivity of DRAWING WORKS and the message of enforcing adventures without turning back despite working with diverse construction owners, sites, and many challenges in store. DRAWING WORKS is a design studio that takes responsibility with consideration for both the past and the future, communicates with nature, and contributes to the public and will continue its voyage towards “sustainable architecture.
