김영배는 건축을 기능적 구조물을 만드는 기술을 넘어, 존재의 감각을 탐구하는 지성적 작업으로 정의한다. 그는 형태를 설계하기에 앞서 건축이 대지 위에서 어떻게 가장 타당하게 존재할 수 있는가에 대한 아이디어를 정립하는 데 집중한다. 이는 물리적 구축을 넘어 건축의 본질적 당위성을 찾아가는 과정이다. 그가 지향하는 자연스러움은 자연의 형상을 모방하거나 은유하는 참조적 행위가 아니다. 그것은 인위적인 것과 자연적인 것, 기술과 감성이 서로를 침범하지 않고 조율되는 미묘한 균형의 상태를 뜻한다. 그의 건축은 내부의 논리와 물질의 질서에 의해 스스로 하나의 상태가 된다. 그 논리는 명문화된 규칙이 아니라, 설계 이전부터 축적된 감각과 믿음에서 비롯된다. 재료는 건물을 짓는 수단을 넘어 인간의 감각과 기억을 매개하는 핵심 언어다. 김영배는 '물질적 인상'이라는 개념을 통해, 특정 재료가 빛과 시간 속에서 인간에게 어떤 직관적 경험을 남기는지 탐구한다. 시각적 화려함보다는 물질의 무게감과 질감, 빛이 만드는 그림자의 깊이를 통해 공간의 본질을 드러낸다. 장식을 걷어낸 순수한 물성은 그만의 견고한 조형 언어가 된다.

Youngbae Kim defines architecture not as the technical production of functional structures, but as an intellectual pursuit of existential sensibility. Before attending to form, he focuses on establishing an idea — a conviction about how a building might most legitimately inhabit its site. This is a process of uncovering architecture's essential justification, beyond the act of physical construction. The naturalness he seeks is not a referential gesture — not an imitation or metaphor drawn from nature's appearances. It is a state of subtle equilibrium in which the artificial and the natural, the technical and the sensory, are brought into accord without encroaching upon one another. His architecture arrives at its own condition through internal logic and material order. That logic is not codified in rules; it originates in sensibility and conviction accumulated long before design begins. Material is not a means of construction — it is the primary language through which human sensation and memory are mediated. Through the concept of matter impression, he investigates the kind of intuitive experience a particular material leaves on the human body as it moves through light and time. Rather than visual spectacle, it is weight, texture, and the depth of shadow cast by light that reveal the essence of a space. Stripped of decorative artifice, pure materiality becomes his firm and distinctive formal language.
He explores how architecture can exist within a place through the relationships between nature, materials, light, and time. Key works include A House for One, Thumbooks, Light Pavilion, and Giwa. He was selected as a recipient of the TSK Teaching Fellowship in 2024, and received the Korean Institute of Architects Special Award — Eom Deok-mun Architecture Award and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Young Artist of the Year Award, both in 2025. He is the author of Naturally.
