DRAWING WORKS was founded in Seoul in 2018 by Youngbae Kim. Before form, we ask how a building can most rightfully exist on its site. Projects seek its resolution through 'matter impression' — an approach that prioritizes the sensory and intuitive experiences materials cultivate over time and within their environment, transcending the mere formal perfection of architectural shape.
드로잉웍스는 2018년 김영배가 서울에서 설립했다. 형태에 앞서, 건축이 대지 위에서 어떻게 가장 타당하게 존재할 수 있는가를 묻는다. 모든 프로젝트는 물질적 인상을 통해 — 건축적 형태의 조형적 완성도를 넘어, 물질이 시간과 환경 속에서 형성하는 감각적이고 직관적인 경험을 중시하는 태도 — 그 답을 찾아간다.

재료는 건물을 짓는 수단을 넘어 인간의 감각과 기억을 매개하는 핵심 언어이다. 드로잉웍스는 '물질적 인상'이라는 개념을 통해, 특정 재료가 빛과 시간 속에서 인간에게 어떤 직관적 경험을 남기는지 탐구한다. 시각적인 화려함보다는 물질의 무게감, 질감, 그리고 빛이 만드는 그림자의 깊이를 통해 공간의 본질을 드러낸다. 장식적인 포장을 걷어낸 순수한 물성은 드로잉웍스만의 견고한 조형 언어가 된다.
DRAWING WORKS defines architecture not as a technical discipline of constructing functional structures, but as an intellectual endeavor that explores the sense of existence. Before designing form, we focus on establishing ideas about how architecture can most legitimately exist on a site. This is a process of seeking the essential justification of architecture beyond physical construction.
The naturalness we pursue is not a referential act of imitating or metaphorizing the forms of nature. It refers to a state of subtle balance in which the artificial and the natural, technology and sensibility, are harmonized without encroaching upon each other. DRAWING WORKS architecture does not attempt to resemble anything external, but becomes a state of its own through internal logic and the order of materials. Instinctive architecture based on sensation before design and belief before logic is our way of relating to the world.
Material is the core language that mediates human sensation and memory beyond the means of constructing buildings. Through the concept of 'matter impression', DRAWING WORKS explores what intuitive experience specific materials leave on humans in the context of light and time. Rather than visual splendor, the essence of space is revealed through the weight, texture, and depth of shadows created by light. Pure materiality stripped of decorative packaging becomes the solid formative language unique to DRAWING WORKS.
